So what is our job as christians all about…? How do we know about our purpose in life is…? What do the scriptures teach us…? And more importantly, are we doing what we should be doing according to God’s inspired word.
Let’s see as we examine our role in life and how we are to conduct ourselves in this life so that we can be pleasing to God Almighty. Our first job is to study God’s Word to learn about what is required of us as His people and to understand how we are to serve our Lord and Master… after all we are supposed to be His servants do right by Him and to be more like Jesus in every possible way. So as we turn to the Bible and read from the New Testament, let’s go through some passages of scriptures that should instruct us on the work that is set before us and get familiar with the work we must be involved in.
Matthew 28: 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
But hang on a moment…how can we do that if we don’t know what is being taught in scripture…? Some may of only recently been baptised into Christ and still haven’t grasped the idea of how a Christian develops as they are just babes in Christ having believed that Jesus is the Son of God, and learnt that they had to repent of the lives they were once involved in before they made the good confession that Jesus was Lord and then by putting on Christ in baptism in order to be forgiven of their former way of life.
Just because you have been added to the body of Christ in baptism, doesn’t mean that’s it, now you are saved…job done. No, what that means is you have only just begun the journey towards your heavenly home. There’s lots more that needs to be learnt in order to become more like Jesus. This is where you must study the scriptures daily and learn how to apply God’s Word to your lives, just like they did in Thessalonica
Acts 17:11 These were were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. As we grow and develop to become more like Jesus, it’s important that we share the Good News with others outside of of the Body of Christ, but in order to do this, we need to put on the full armour as mentioned in…
Ephesians 6:11-20
11 Put on the whole armour God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints–
19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,
20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
As bondservants we are to be faithful and obedient to Christ Our Lord and not be men-pleasers as some are, but with sincerity of heart doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same from the Lord.
It’s also important to use our talents wisely that we have been blessed with, in order to build up the church so as to shine in a darken world in the hope of drawing others to the truth by which they can be saved, because we should know that we all have special talents we can use in our daily lives that can be put to good use that can strengthen the body, the church. When we use our God given talents we can achieve so much more and we know that God can give us the increase providing we are all working together to build one another up.
Matthew 25:18 the kingdom of heaven is like a man travelling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.
16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.
17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also.
18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20 So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’
21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’
23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
Now regarding the fact, as brethren, we are all at different stages in our christian walk, however we are all capable of teaching those who are lost of the first steps we took when we obeyed the gospel and we should be talking to our family and friends and those we come into contact with, giving them the opportunity to respond to scriptures and the steps they must take in order to be saved… needless to say, we all know that we need to believe God’s inspired word, and we know that the next step they must take is to repent and turn away from the sins they once did in times past, and we all know that you need to confess Jesus as Lord… and we should all know that your sins haven’t been forgiven until you have been baptised into Christ… for most that’s the easy part of becoming a christian, now comes the more challenging part which is to lead a good faithful, obedient life until you pass from this life into eternity when it is all over. Yes, there will be many trials and temptations throughout you christian life and some of us may falter and fall away and be lost, but for those of us who stay strong and steadfast in the Lord, we must continue to contend for the truth and do the work that we have been entrusted with to the very best of our ability.
My job today has been to preach the gospel to you, but this lesson also applies to me as a bondservant of Christ as 2Timothy 4:1-5
1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Brethren, lets continue to be the kind of people that pleases God and lets learn what we need to do to be more like Jesus everyday of the days that remain in our lives, lets learn how we ought to conduct ourselves and be the best kind of people as we apply God’s Inspired Word to our everyday lives, and be ready for His return, because we will be judged in the way we have lead our lives here on earth. May God continue to bless both you and me… Amen
